Formatting the TOC Page

You can:

  • Show the contents page on the left side of the screen using frames in WebHelp.
  • Create a dynamic TOC by using JavaScript so that the user can expand TOC levels and the TOC synchronizes with the current topic. Show the dynamic TOC an each topic page in a pop-up window or in a sidebar. If the dynamic TOC is displayed in a sidebar headers and footers are automatically fixed, even if the corresponding options are not turned on in the project.
  • Determine how many levels you want to expand when the page is opened on the Files & Format > Output Options > Contents Page page.
  • Determine how many levels you want to include in the TOC on the Files & Format > Output Options > Contents Page page.
  • Format the TOC as table. Set table options on the Files & Format > Output Options > Contents Page page.
  • Omit headers and footers on the contents page.
  • Add a brief description of the table of contents to the Special Topic !!CONTENTS. The text is shown one line below the title.
  • Apply character and paragraph styles to the table of contents using these Formatting Elements:
Formatting Element
Meaning
Content Body
Sets the position of the whole content of the contents page, except headers footers and the title.
Content Title
Formats the topic title of the contents page.
Content Level
Sets the indentation of topic levels on the contents page.
Content Folder
Formats contents entries on the contents page.
Content Topic
Formats topics on the contents page.
Content Group
Formats group topics on the contents page.
Content Folder, Group, Topic (hovering, link, visited link)
Additional elements for entries on the contents page. Use the Link and Visited Link element to apply character formatting to entries. Use hovering to set borders and background colors to highlight entries when the user points to them.
Content Table
Formats the contents page when you use the table mode.
Content Table Heading
Formats the table heading of the contents page when you use the table mode.
Content Table Cell
Formats cells of the table when you use the table mode.
Special Topic Text (same for all special topics)
Formats text that is added to the contents page in the special topic !!CONTENTS.
Embedded Feature, Embedded Feature Background, Embedded Feature Close, Embedded Feature Content, Embedded Feature Content Container, Embedded Feature Title
Formats all elements for the embedded TOC that is displayed in a popup.
Page Content Sidebar, Page Content with Sidebar, Page Content Sidebar Wrap
Formats the containers for displaying the dynamic TOC in a sidebar.

You can change character and paragraph styles of other Formatting Elements of the contents page (page content body, file body, header and footer) by changing the Formatting Elements of each page.

You can:

  • Set the level of topics that expand in the TOC and in the bookmarks on the Files & Format > Output Options page.
  • Align page numbers on the right, on the Files & Format > Output Options page.
  • Show chapter numbers in your TOC on the Files & Format > Page Layout > Numbering & Breaks page.
  • Apply character and paragraph styles to the table of contents using these Formatting Elements:
