Numbering and Page Breaks

How to get here: In Settings on the PDF or RTF Configuration tab, select Files & Format > Page Layout > Numbering & Breaks

Chapter numbers appear in topic headings and in page headers. Page numbers are printed in PDF footers. A full page break is inserted in front of each top level topic.

  1. In the Style for box, select All Chapters to apply a uniform style to all chapters in your document. This style is not applied to the TOC and the Index. Title page and copyright page are not numbered.
  2. To apply a page numbering style to your TOC or page number and chapter numbering style to your Index, click the Style for arrow. Note that you can not number the TOC.
  3. To apply another style to a specific part of you document click Add. All top level topics in your document are listed. Select the topic for which you want to start another numbering style. For example, you might apply another numbering style to your appendix.
  1. Under Page in the Numbering box, select how your pages are numbered. You can show page numbers or page numbers and chapter numbers in your footer.
  2. To show page numbers and chapter numbers in footers and the TOC select the Show chapter number check box.
  3. To restart numbering for the selected topic, select the Restart at radio button and set the number you want to restart with.
  4. To continue page numbers select Continue.
  1. In the Levels box, select the topic level for which you want to apply another numbering.
  2. To apply another chapter numbering style starting at a specific top level topic, you can either continue numbering on the top level or you can restart numbering.
  3. In the Type box, select the numbering style.
  4. In the Sub Levels box, determine how many previous level numbers are printed in the current heading.
  5. Into the Separator box, type the character you want to insert between numbers of chapter levels.
  6. In the Pos box, select whether you want to insert the separator before the current chapter level or after. Separators are only printed between two levels. If you do not show sub levels before the current chapter number, no separator is inserted. The separator entered here replaces the dot you might use in variable %[.]CL1-7[.]%.
  7. Into the Text before box, type the text you want to print before the number. For example, you might enter Chapter or Part.
  8. Into the Text after box, type the text you want to print after the number.
  9. To print your chapter numbers, do one of the following:
    • To print chapter numbers in headers and footers, you need to enter the corresponding variables on page Page Header and Page Footer.
    • To print chapter numbers in front of the heading, select the On page check box.
    • To print chapter numbers in TOC, select the In TOC check box.
