Formatting Links

There are several ways to link to other parts of your project or to external targets. On this page you will learn how to format manually added or automatically created links.

  1. The default link text of automatically generated links is the word or symbol name that was linked. You can replace the link text by the target title for all links (manually added and automatically generated) on a per section basis in the section definition.
  2. On the Quick Access Toolbar, click Settings .
  3. Click the General Settings Configuration tab.
  4. Select Sections.
  5. In the Section list, select the section you want to edit.
  6. Click Edit.
  7. Select the Replace link text with target title check box. For more information about section definitions, see New Section.

Links in the HTML Help systems can be modified using the Link, Link.Active, Link.Visited und Link.Broken Formatting Elements.

There are several ways to change the appearance of links in PDF and RTFdocuments on the Files & Format > Output Options > Links page. If you print your PDF and RTF document, you can print the page numbers of the page on which the link target is located.

The link text can consist of any text and can use the following variables:

Variable
Meaning
%G%
Outputs the link graphic at the position of variable.
%T%
Is replaced by the title of the target topic.
%T,%
Is replaced by the title of the target topic followed by a comma.
%P%
Is replaced by the page number of the target topic.

Doc-O-Matic replaces the link text with (%G% see, page %P%) by default.

You can:

  • Ignore %T% and %T,% variables if the title of the topic is the same as the link text by selecting Suppress target title if link text is the same check box.
  • Show links in preformatted text underlined only by selecting the option Don't format links on preformatted text blocks check box.
  • Link text can be modified using the Link, Link Broken, Link.External, Link.Code and Link.PDF External Formatting Elements.
