Formatting Elements

The HTML Help systems and the PDF document you can insert headers and footers that you can format separately. Headers and footers appear on each page except the welcome (HTML Help) and title page (PDF).

  • There are several ways to change the appearance of headers and footers. Using the options on the Files & FormatLayoutPage Footer/Page Header pages you can:
    1. Show any text in header and footer areas. Doc-O-Matic uses the PROJECTTITLE variable to show the project title of the project in the header of the page by default.
    2. Show linked images to open pop-up windows. The Links (See Also section in Visual Studio templates) section appears in a pop-up window by default. Linked images appear in front of the project information.
    3. Show a path to the current topic. The path appears in headers in the WebHelp configuration by default.
    4. Show a feedback link. A feedback link appears in footers by default. On the Files & FormatLayoutFeedback Variables page you can define variables for the feedback link.
    5. Include images.
    6. Format headers and footers using HTML code.
    7. Create links to content, reference, glossary and index page.
    8. Create Neighbor links to other topics.
    9. Leave both header and footer empty.
  1. On the Views Bar, click Settings.
  2. Click a HTML Configuration tab.
  3. Select Files & FormatLayoutFormatting.
  4. Use the Page Header and Page Footer and Page Header/Footer Neighbor and Global Links Formatting Elements.

  3. Select Files & FormatLayout.
  4. Select the Fixed header check box to show a header that does not move when the user scrolls down in the topic.
  5. Click Full frames to show your company logo or other information. Frames do only work with Help 2 and WebHelp.
  • There are several ways to format PDF headers and footers. You can:
    1. Omit headers and footers, by clearing the Show Page Header/Footer check box on the Files & FormatPage LayoutHeader/Footer pages.
    2. Divide header and footer areas into two or three columns and two rows. Each cell can have one or two rows. In these cells you can enter text or use variables.
    3. Show images in headers and footers by using the variable %IM FILENAME%. Omit the filename extension and insert the image path in the Project Manager. Make sure that the text and the images you use fit in the respective cell.
    4. Customize page number styles on the Files & FormatPage LayoutNumbering & Breaks page.
    5. Apply formatting to text in each cell by using the respective Formatting Element on the Files & FormatPage LayoutFormatting page.
    6. Change the height of header and footer areas on the Files & FormatPage Layout page .
    7. In a double-sided document, cell contents are swapped on each left page. If you use only one cell and you want the information or the image to appear in the middle of your header or footer, make sure that you align the Formatting Elements for the right and the left header and footer cell to the center.
